Our Approach

Our Approach | On-Farm Mastitis Screening, Culture and Reporting
FROM FARM INFORMATION TO PRACTICAL FOLLOW-UP

A clearer history. A more useful next step.

Mastitis-related information can be spread across SCC reports, cow histories, quarter records, culture findings, treatment histories and observations.

OnFarm Lab brings available information together, investigates where useful and helps maintain a clearer record of what happens over time.

THE WORKFLOW

Six connected steps

The report reflects the information available; missing records or incomplete histories limit what can be concluded.

1

Review

We begin with the information the farm already has: SCC records, repeat-cow history, cow-wise and quarter-wise information, previous culture results, treatment history, dates and relevant veterinary records.

2

Screen

OnFarm technicians visit the farm and screen cows as part of the agreed investigation. Findings are considered alongside available records to identify cases or quarters that may warrant further investigation.

3

Culture where useful

Selected samples can be cultured on the farm when additional information is useful. Under the current workflow, results are available after approximately 20 hours of on-farm incubation.

4

Organise the findings

The field technician and farm personnel provide relevant information to the central OnFarm Lab team, which prepares the report. It may organise SCC trends, screening and culture findings, repeat cases, dates and supplied treatment or veterinary information.

5

Follow up

Review repeat cases, compare subsequent findings and maintain a more consistent history for discussion with the farm’s veterinarian.

6

Measure what changes

Over time, records may help review changes in SCC, recurring cow or quarter problems, culture patterns and completeness of herd history. Improvements should be assessed from actual farm information.

A COMPLEMENTARY ROLE

Support for the farm and veterinarian

OnFarm Lab supports screening, culture information, record organisation and follow-up. Veterinary diagnosis and treatment decisions remain with the farm’s responsible veterinarian.

QUARTER-BY-QUARTER INVESTIGATION

Investigate individual quarters without robotic milking

Advanced robotic milking systems can continuously monitor milk conductivity and other udder-health parameters at quarter level. Robotic milking systems are not required when working with OnFarm Lab Solutions. OnFarm Lab screens individual quarters for relevant parameters and stores the records for as long as the service continues.

These findings become part of the cow’s and quarter’s history, alongside available SCC records, culture information and follow-up notes. They support review and discussion with the farm’s veterinarian; they do not replace veterinary diagnosis or treatment decisions.
